Volunteer this month for Project Homeless Connect, on Jan. 27, 10a.m.-3 p.m.

Volunteers are needed on Jan. 27 to make this event possible. Project Homeless Connect is a one-day, one-stop service event that builds connection, community and hope for individuals and families experiencing homelessness or those at risk of homelessness.  Missoula's 11th Annual Project Homeless Connect  is scheduled for Friday, January 27, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Missoula County Fairgrounds. It's a major Thing in our town every year, supported by the mayor, the county commissioners and the At-Risk Housing Coalition (which we also staff).

At the event, participants are able to receive a haircut, medical and dental care, reading glasses, a warm meal, clothing, blankets, mental health counseling, legal advice, housing assistance, employment counseling, benefits enrollment, senior services, personal hygiene packets, pet services, and more.  This care and outreach is provided with the direct help of nonprofit service providers, local businesses, churches, government agencies, and dozens of community volunteers.  The event is free, and no appointments are necessary.

Project Homeless Connect serves as a catalyst for community involvement and gives people and organizations who have never been directly involved with this population a way to make a difference. It also shows homeless people and those on the edge of homelessness that while we work on long-term solutions (on ending homelessness), we ALSO want to provide immediate help to those who need it.  At Missoula’s 10th Project Homeless Connect event in January 2016, 93 service agencies and 201 volunteers were able to connect 349 of Missoula’s most vulnerable community members with essential services, supporting efforts to prevent and end homelessness.  The most requested services were clothing, medical care, food, and transportation.

What is the Day of Action?

Day of Action is a community-wide day of hands-on volunteering.  United Way of Missoula County connects volunteers from local businesses with local nonprofit organizations to complete various projects, like painting, clean-up, yard work, etc. 2016 will be the 21st consecutive year United Way has held this community service day.

United Way Day of Action demonstrates how volunteerism is vital to our community.  It empowers people to work together to address some of the community’s most urgent needs.  The event provides a firsthand look at the services offered in our community. The hands-on volunteer experiences provide excellent opportunities for employee team-building.  It also spotlights United Way of Missoula County’s role in bringing volunteers together to advance the common good for all.  Volunteer teams from local businesses that wish to participate in the Day of Action will be matched with projects submitted by our nonprofit partners.

Spend the morning, afternoon or all-day working on hands-on projects that will help make a difference in Missoula County...

Near the the longest day of the year (June 21); we're asking you to round up a group of friends or co-workers and volunteer a few hours that day to make our community stronger. No special skills are needed--just a desire to work with others to improve education, income and health in Missoula County!
